We’re not far down this yellow brick road, but the storyline is developing.
First, that tornado obviously didn’t spawn from the Miami Hurricanes; they ought to be downgraded. According to the polls, Pete Carroll, the Wicked Witch of the, uh, West, still reigns over the munchkins. One thing’s for sure; Dorothy won’t be meeting any tin man, scarecrow, or cowardly lion on this yellow brick road, but instead a Wolverine, a Leprechaun, and a Blue Devil. The Wolverines have Hart but no heart. The Leprechaun needs some courage on offense. And the Blue Devils, well they just need a brain to figure out how to win a game, but they’ve been searching for Oz for a while now.
It may be early in the season, but it’s never too early to prove that you’ve got what it takes to win.
Only two weeks in, it’s easy to see who does and who doesn’t.
LSU and Oklahoma definitely do; they both made a tough game look easy, very easy. And there’s nothing yellow about the South Florida Bulls, either; they walked onto the field as underdogs and left as winners, as did Washington.
But Michigan and Notre Dame, most notably, find themselves heartless and without courage. I doubt Dorothy will come along and take them off to see the wonderful Wizard of Oz, so Charlie Weis and Lloyd Carr will have to do. And if they don’t do something soon, they may be on their own yellow brick roads searching for a job.
But, once again, it’s early in the season and nothing is certain. But with many powerhouse programs down and other programs on the rise, one thing is for sure: we’re not in Kansas anymore.
